I recently read an article at www.diagnosticimaging.com that explores the risk of eye injury to radiologists. I’ve certainly experienced temporary dry eyes when concentrating on an image and not blinking enough. But other risks include eye strain, corneal erosions, headaches and glaucoma.
The reading environment is not well studied or understood, and fatigue and injury are becoming more prevalent. As a result, radiologists need better interventions before irreparable damage occurs, said Elizabeth A. Krupinski, Ph.D., an informatics specialist at the University of Arizona. She spoke at the 2007 Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine meeting in Providence.
Although vision is critical to our specialty, there has been little research into these issues. The environment we read in, including lighting, glare, and screen settings can affect our eyes’ health as well as diagnostic accuracy. It’s worth thinking about.
