Teaching cases are an invaluable tool for any level of instruction in radiology. They are a great way to practice your approach to a radiograph, and also illustrate particular features of diseases. Cases are also good for group discussions, as everyone contributes their knowledge to the case.
MIRC is an open-source software tool designed for radiologic teaching cases. Click on MIRC to take a look, or navigate from the links section. I’ve worked with MIRC to create a veterinary mode that is now included in the versions. You can check it out at the RSNA MIRC site . The instructions for setting up the vet mode are here . The veterinary mode involved setting up species and breed codes, and altering the sex field for our veterinary patients.
The site is fairly easy to use, just click on “search” to get started. That will bring up all of the cases currently on the site. You can also click on “advanced” to search by species, body system, or level of difficulty. You can also view them as unknown cases if you want to test yourself. We need some good collections of cases for veterinary radiology, and this tool makes it easy to do.
