Today’s case is a 3 year old Bassett Hound, 55 days gestation, with a small amount of dark vulvar discharge. What is your assessment of the fetuses?
The abdomen is distended because of the gravid uterus. There are 5 well-mineralized feti consistent with the age of gestation. On the ventrodorsal projection, there is a small, collapsed, partially mineralized fetus just cranial to the left ilium. No gas is visualized in the uterus. The remainder of the abdominal organs appear normal.
At least one nonviable fetus, which likely died several weeks previously. There is no evidence of necrosis on the images.
An abdominal ultrasound was performed, and 3 nonviable and 5 viable fetuses were identified. There was no evidence of excessive fluid accumulation or gas in the uterus.
