Today’s case is a 10-year-old male neutered Labrador Retriever with swelling under right mandible and ptyalism from the right side. How would you describe the lesion?
There is an expansile and lytic mass arising from the right mandible. There is mild soft tissue swelling associated with the mass. There is peripheral new bone with an irregular appearance. The left mandible and dental structures appear normal.
Differential diagnoses for the mandibular mass include osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, fibrosarcoma. Thoracic radiographs should be performed to evaluate for metastasis. CT may be helpful for further assessment and surgical planning.
A fine needle aspirate of the mass revealed sarcoma (DDx fibrosarcoma, fibrous subtype of osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma).
